Design Elements
< prev  |  next >
Throughout the design process, input has been sought by community leaders, the North Union Street merchants and the general public regarding the streetscape elements of the design. Some of highlights include:
  • The North Union Street project will include five roundabouts, which will make the street safer and more efficient for vehicles.
  • How do we plan to maintain North Union Street once all of this construction is completed? The good news is that because of enhanced technology (LED lighting) and the removal of traffic signals, a substantial cost savings will be realized. Those savings can be used for the maintenance requirements for the new North Union Street such as regular landscape clean-up.
  • One question that has been asked is what about the sidewalks? A 10-foot section of sidewalk will remain during construction to provide access to businesses. A new five-foot section of sidewalk will be constructed to provide a 15-foot sidewalk area for street amenities. These street features such as benches, bike racks, tree gates and trash receptacles will contribute to the "Complete Street" goal of the project, and provide facilities for users and help with maintenance.
